Nas - Nigger Hatred mp3

More new music from Nasir.
I'm assuming that this must be the intro to his new 'untitled' album, the cover of which is above.

Sneaker Culture + Horror Classic = Abject Fuckery

A special edition Nike Dunk SB in a 'Nightmare on Elm Street' colourway. Known as the Freddy Krueger Dunk's, they feature the famous stripes of Freddy's jumper, and a splattered blood design. These puppies can be yours for the princely sum of $2000 (US) if you click here (more pics too).
In a nutshell, these are horribly ugly and stoopidly expensive... they should have been called the Nike Ribery.

Jay-Z - Heart of the City (Video) Live at Glastonbury

For me, this was the highlight of Jay's headline performance on Saturday night.

I had some moral concerns about the use of "Sunday, Blood Sunday" for a song that includes lines like "faggots hate when you gettin' money like athletes", but it worked well.

Winehouse Calls Kanye "a cunt"

The putrid calamity of a baghead that is Amy Winehouse calls Kanye West a "cunt" during her utterly embarrassing set at Glastonbury. Funny? Not at all.

Why is the humour lost on me? Because, usually when I see someone who looks like a dirty smackhead who spends their time rotting to death in a bedsit with proper cunts like Pete Doherty, swearing indescriminately in public, I cross the road to avoid them. I just feel sorry for the people who still pay good money to see her 'sing'. Wasted talent on a gross scale. Remind me who the cunt is again?

Nas - Fried Chicken mp3

Produced by Mark Ronson (which is self evident when the horns kick in) and featuring Busta Rhymes.
Taken from Nas's forthcoming 'untitled' album... you know, the one that used to be called this.

Lykke Li - "Can I Kick It?" Cover (Video)

A current favourite artist + a live gig in my city + a track by my all-time favourite Hip Hop group = Lykke Li in London covering A Tribe Called Quest's "Can I Kick It?".

Magic.

RocknRolla - Trailer (New Guy Ritchie film)

This looks like a half-decent effort from Mr Madonna.
Starring Jeremy Piven, Gerard Butler (dude from 300), Thandie Newton, Tom Wilkinson, Idris Elba (Stringer Bell in The Wire), rapper Ludacris and new Bond girl Gemma Arterton.

Elbow - Back To Black (Amy Winehouse cover) mp3

This has been knocking about for a few weeks now, but it's very good, so I thought I might as well post it for archiving purposes.

Vampire Weekend: Oxford Comma (Video)

New Video from Preppy New-York based Paul Simon tribute act, Vampire Weekend.

This is good, but I can't help feel that there were songs on that album that should have been picked as a single waaaay before this. 'Campus' for one...

D'Angelo - Spanish Joint (Live Acoustic) mp3

This is a rip of a live version of D'Angelo's 'Spanish Joint' track. Just a piano, D'Angelo's voice, and an incredible song.
I first heard this on Gilles Peterson's Radio 1 show a few weeks back and have been scouring 'the internets' for an mp3. Nobody has one. I don't know where this track came from, but there is a very similarly orchestrated live version of 'Africa' (also from the classic 'Voodoo' album) out there that seems to be from a documentary or interview. Either way, download this and enjoy. The mp3 of the live version of 'Africa' will follow in the next day or so.

Burial - Archangel mp3

The Mercury Music Prize nominees for 2008 are announced on July 22nd, and Burial's 'Untrue' album will be amongst them. This is not the best track from the album... so that should tell you something about how good it is. Nobody really knows much about Burial, how old he is, where he's from... he doesn't do interviews. Listening to his music, he doesn't really need to... on it's own it speaks volumes about a way of life in London (a subculture of clubs, concrete and night buses) that a magazine Q&A session couldn't come close to.
Without a doubt, the most original and earcatching thing I've heard all year.

MF DOOM x Dilla x Ghostface Killer = Sniperlite & Murder Goons

Good Lord... my DOOM, Dilla and Ghost 'Stan' radars went off when I saw this. Peanut Butter Wolf's legendary Stones Throw records is launching an online record shop (or 'webstore') where you can buy their original yet true-to-the-culture Hip Hop and beats without dealing with 'middle men', and these two exclusive tracks are how they entice you in. Excellent plan...
--------------------------------------
Here's what they have to say about it:
--------------------------------------
"In late 2005 Ghostface Killer and MF DOOM were both recording over tracks from J Dilla's instrumental opus, Donuts, which saw release the following February. Some of these were released on Ghostface's Fishscale in 2006, while others, including a Dilla-DOOM project, were postponed indefinitely after J Dilla's passing. Two of these tracks, 'Sniperlite' and 'Murder Goons', will be released digitally, exclusively through Stones Throw's webstore, due to launch in late June."

The Million Dollar Laptop

Jesus.
This laptop, made by the company Singulum, comes in a variety of 'exotic' woods and your choice of an ivory or gold keyboard. The cherry on top, almost literally, is that the touch-sensitive point-tip can be a diamond, if sir or madam wishes. It will cost you (little finger to the side of mouth)... one million dollars! That's a lot of money for a machine that will be used just to look at porn.
If you must, go here to see more pictures.

Fleet Foxes - White Winter Hymnal mp3

Labelled as "the next big thing to come out of Seattle" after a show-stealing set at this years' SXSW festival and compared to bands like Midlake and the Beach Boys, Fleet Foxes' debut self-titled album is released tomorrow, packed full of west coast sounds and a cappella harmonies.
You can click here to buy it for a very reasonable price. Here's a free track that will convince you to do just that.

Noah & The Whale - 5 Years Time mp3

A 5-piece hailing from North side of old father Thames... Noah & The Whale. The BBC has called their music "melodic, sometimes melancholic, dream pop". Sounds good. No, it really does... listen...

Dan Witz - Ugly New Buildings

I like this kind of thing, from Brooklyn artist Dan Witz.

Dan Says: "In the past few years much of my neighborhood in Brooklyn has been torn down to make way for luxury housing. For better or worse it's a whole new street-scape out here. Personally, I can't say I like the new modern architecture very much, it's sterile and alienating and so arrogantly disconnected with its surroundings sometimes it seems like giant alien space ships have landed. But let's face it, bemoaning gentrification in New York City is futile, it's like complaining about the noise or other unstoppable forces of urban nature. So for this summer's piece I tried to make the best of it. These are photo-based, heavily re-painted stickers, mounted on plastic and glued to the walls of the Ugly New Buildings. In May I put up around 30 and about half are still there."

Go here to see Dan's new 'Ugly New Buildings' collection.

Lil' Wayne - Shoot Me Down (produced by Kanye West) mp3

Although not a fan of Wayne per se, 4 or 5 tracks from his new album are very good ('Dr. Carter' and 'Let The Beat Build' in particular). This is one of them. I vouch for this 100%.

Produced by Kanye West.

Converse x Strokes x N.E.R.D. x Santogold = My Drive Thru mp3

I decided that this deserves its own post... Converse have teamed up with Pharrell, Julian Casablancas and Santogold to commemorate, thru the medium of music, the 100th birthday of the Chuck Taylor All Star shoe.

Sigur Ros - New Album Stream

You can stream the new long-player from Iceland's Sigur Ros, 'Með suð i eyrum við spilum endalaustover' ('with a buzz in our ear we play endlessly'), at Gorilla Vs. Bear right now.
I've always quite liked these chaps ('Hoppipolla' was a large part of what made the BBC's Planet Earth so memorable) but not quite as much as Chris Martin does. Best Band in the world? Not so sure about that...

Coldplay - Lost (Piano Version) mp3

New music from Coldplay. This may have been the demo version as the only accompaniment is a piano, unlike the clap-beat/organ heavy album version. This version is certainly less upbeat in mood than the album mix. I prefer this.
The final version can be found on Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends, out June 12th.

Michael from The Wire: Baltimore to Beverley Hills

SMH at this... Michael from The Wire has moved up in the world. No longer the streets of Baltimore for this one-time 'hopper' turned Stanfield-crew Lieutenant. No, young 'un has moved to Los Angeles to be the new Carlton Banks in 'Beverly Hills 90210' (version 2.0).
Do we really need a new version of that show? I suppose the original was a precurser to the real-life fuckery of the 'Paris Lohan' set, so it's only natural that it would return now (in a world that has become the Sodom and Gomorrah of celebrity worship).
I'd rather have had a sixth season of The Wire... you feel me?

Lykke Li - Dance Dance Dance mp3

Her album 'Youth Novels', produced by Bjorn Yttling (of Peter, Bjorn and John) is out today. Go and buy it (I did).
Here is another taster... one that I'm sure will further convince you of her brilliance.

The Fall (a film by Tarsem Singh) - Trailer

The new film from Tarsem (the man behind the visually stunning, but narratively baron J.Lo flick 'The Cell') looks better than anything I've seen since his last picture. I say 'new', it was completed in 2006 and has had sporadic releases (usually at Film Festivals), but I believe it is to get a full theatrical release in art house cinemas across the world, thanks to a "Spike Jonze and David Fincher present..." tagline.
It looks breathtaking, but whether it works as a film and not just as a work of visual art remains to be seen.

N.E.R.D. - Lazergun Carrying mp3 (UK Bonus Track)

The bonus track from the UK version of their 'Seeing Sounds' CD (which dropped today, incidentally. Go here to buy it). The Japanese version of the album has a bonus track called 'My Drive Thru' featuring Julian from The Strokes and Santogold that you can download if you head over to Shake's place.

Born Ruffians - Hummingbird mp3 (from Orange advert)

The accompanying track from the new Orange mobile advert, with all the balloons spilling from the train. This is a young Canadian trio called Born Ruffians, who are signed to Warp Records (home of Jamie Lidell, Maximo Park, Aphex Twin, Nightmares on Wax and many more) and have been in the UK this past week, playing a few small gigs, most notably at the Hoxton Bar & Kitchen.
If you like this track, you can go here and buy their recently released album, from which this track was taken.

Leak: iPhone 2 images

Looks like I'll be taking a hammer to my house brick-sized iPhone pretty soon. Steve Jobs is ready to take another 300 quid from me if this story is to be believed (click the story for a bunch of images!).
Apple Inc have spotted these photo's before, and demanded that they are taken down immediately before their lawyers get involved.
***************
Promising a slimmer phone with a longer battery life (as well as 'Video Chat', which sounds a little bit 'Back To The Future 2' to me), the iPhone 2 is on it's way, and those in the know in Silicon Valley are expecting an announcement in the next week or so.
Start saving...

Nas - Hero mp3

Yet more new music from Nasir, produced by Polow Da Don (I've not heard it yet, but based on who provided the beats, I'm assuming this is pretty terrible, musically).
This is the official first single from his incoming album 'Nigger' 'Nas'. (I knew Def Jam wouldn't allow him to call it that!).
A release date of July 15th has also been rumoured.

Clutchy Hopkins - Sound of the Ghost mp3

So, the story goes something like this... a record label A&R (from Ubiquity Records) stumbled upon some dusty reel to reel tapes at a garage sale, somewhere in the US. The tapes were marked 'C. Hopkins'. On those tapes were numerous instrumental tracks (which are excellent). The A&R tries for months to track down the elusive C. Hopkins, to no avail, and thus the stories of this mysterious musical genious start to appear... "he is a 70 year old handyman who found some musical instruments and recording equipment and created this music without any training at all" is my current favourite.
As far as marketing schemes go, it seems to be working a treat. You can find numerous internet sites dedicated to the quest for truth on Clutchy's real identity (Money Mark? DJ Shadow? Cut Chemist?) and critics are lapping up the "Walking Backwards" album. Go here to read some review snippets. Here's a track for you... whoever he really is, he makes good music.

DJ Cam Quartet - Rebirth of Cool mp3

Paris's DJ Cam and friends cover Common's Resurrection track in jazzy-instrumental style.
Horns, drums, piano... a perfect summer track.

Madlib - Motown Mix mp3

The mighty Madlib, from LA's Stones Throw record label puts together a mix of over an hours worth of classic tracks from the Motown catalogue; from Stevie Wonder and The Jackson Five, to Smokey Robinson and The Four Tops. Download this now and burn it to a disc, because its priceless... trust me.

Fake Plastic Boosh

According to the NME... "Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich is in line to produce the forthcoming album by 'The Mighty Boosh' comedy duo. Noel Fielding, one half of the comedy duo along with Julian Barratt, told XFM that Godrich is a contender to take on production duties for the record, currently in its planning stages."

This album will no doubt be 'coming at you like a flannel' in the coming year.

Wanted - Final Trailer

Preposterousness abounds here... Preposterous accents, preposterous story & action (in a bad way), preposterous casting, Ange looks preposterous (in a good way). Click here for the final trailer, courtesy of myspace (preposterously).

Black Keys - I Got Mine mp3

My favourite band by a long way at the moment... The Black Keys from Akron, Ohio. Purveyors of dirty, fuzzy, dusty, soulful, at times psychedelic rock & roll.
Here is a track from the new album, produced by the worlds busiest producer Danger Mouse, from their new album Attack & Release. It will literally rip your face off. Turn it up to 11, "it's one louder".

The Raconteurs - Salute Your Solution (Video: Live on Jools Holland)

If you missed this, you lost. Until now, that is...

American Apparel = Pervs?

Yes that ad is real... American Apparel is the ethically sound, reasonably priced, colourful clothing retailer that makes all of it's clothes in Indian Sweatshops downtown L.A., and pays their staff excellently. Being a cynic, I thought this all sounded too good to be true and, sure enough, they have recently endured a smear campaign (about their 'squeeky clean image' being a load of old bollocks). I always thought American Apparel's ad's were quite good, then I thought about why... lots of girls not wearing much (I'm a man, after all). Then I read this story, and whilst elements are initially funny, the adult in me kicks in and I think... why would I want to give my money to this gimp?

Five Franklin Place, NYC

I want to live here. Designed by Dutch architect Ben van Berkel, work on this building has just begun in the TriBeCa district of downtown Manhattan. The penthouse apartment may be out of my price range, what with the credit crunch and all. Click here for more photos of this dump.

DJ Cam - Summer In Paris mp3

This is not new, and I've not posted it for any reason other than it has rained all day in London and the summery sounds cheer me up. (This is the first of what will be many 'weather-depressed' posts).

White Denim - Let's Talk About It (Video)

White Denim are new band from Austin, Texas. The place where SXSW takes place (which I have to get to one day). This track was self-released as part of an EP that is difficult to find, but I think iTunes are carrying it now. Their debut album will be called '11 Songs' and is due out sometime this year. But on download or 12" vinyl only.

This track is a standout from that original EP and the video is good too. Who doesn't love a touch of noisy blues-rock?

The Fratellis - Shameless mp3

Brand new Fratellis, in their trademark spirited style, from their album 'Here We Stand' (in the shops from Monday 9th June). Try and tell me it doesn't sound like Slade...

Glass + Public Toilet = Wrong

Click here for the pay-off. I'd still be incredibly cautious.

What, no Stereophonics?

Rolling Stone magazine count down the top 100 best guitar tracks of all time. The top 5 is as follows (if I wasn't very lazy, I'd have posted a link to each one, but I am very lazy):

1) Johnny B. Goode-Chuck Berry
2) Purple Haze-Jimi Hendrix
3) Crossroads-Cream
4) You Really Got Me-The Kinks
5) Brown Sugar-Rolling Stones

Massively chuffed that a bunch of Yanks would put The Kinks so high up the list... I expected Eric Clapton and the Stones to be there or thereabouts, but I always see Ray Davies and his mob as being slightly less 'international'. Led Zep must have the hump though...

Wu Tang Office

This is moderately humourous... Some characters re-enact some famous skits from Wu Tang Clan's seminal debut album, comedically transfering the action from the housing Projects of Staten Island, to the project meetings of Manhattan Island (see what I did there?). Click these:
