Best Albums of 2009 - No. 8

8. Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest
-
This album is about more than advertising track placements and celebrity fan (Jay-Z and Beyonce) endorsements. I first heard Two Weeks through GvsB, who posted a rip of Grizzly Bear's live performance on the Letterman show (mp3 below). Since then, that particular track has been hard to avoid, but I know it has been an excellent advert in itself for the album. A little bit folk, a little bit indie, we have another album that is difficult to categorise succinctly, probably due to the lack of overriding trademark image (no big hair, no skinny jeans, no beards) or gimmick (not recorded in a log cabin, not a supergroup).
-
Veckatimest is another sunny, summertime album, but one that drifts over you with a light touch, rather than many of the Beach Boys tribute bands we have seen of late, where 'SUMMER!' is rammed down your neck, whether you like it or not.
-
I'll leave you with that Two Weeks (Live) mp3 and the video for my current favourite track from the album...

Tom Cruise is not gay and Cameron Diaz doesn't look rough as old boots.

Simon Cowell: Shit for Ears (Charlie Brooker)

Furiously disillusioned prose wizard Charlie Brooker, writing on the X-Factor chart backlash:
-
"While I'm happy for Rage Against the Machine to be enjoying the sales and publicity, I can't help thinking we could've organised a slightly better protest ourselves. Chances are the X Factor will try to kick back extra hard next year – perhaps by actually releasing a song with a melody in it – so it's best to start planning the resistance now.
-
The temptation might be to pour a lot of time and effort into creating a catchy anti-X Factor anthem, but the smartest counter-move would be to release something short, cheap and throwaway that isn't even a proper song at all. I propose a track called Simon Cowell: Shit for Ears, which consists of a couple of eight-year-olds droning the phrase "Simon Cowell, shit for ears" four times in a row in the most deliberately tuneless manner possible.
-
It should last only about 15 seconds or so. Quick enough to register; brief enough not to outstay its welcome.
Then we release it online at the lowest price possible. What's the bare minimum you can charge and still be eligible for a chart position? It could be as little as 2p. Because the track is just recorded on to a cheap mic, and released without the assistance of any record label, 100% of the profits go to charity."
-
Read the rest of Charlie's brilliant, constructive rant by clicking HERE.
I'll be first in the queue (does iTunes have queues?) to buy 'Shit for Ears' if it's released next December...

Joy Orbison - She Dressed In Her Best (Audio)

This fella is killing it...

Sia - You've Changed (Video)

I like Sia.

She's cool.

That is all.

Comedy...

...but the sad fact is, many of those women claiming that Tiger touched them on their privates will make a lot of money out of this whole affair (pun intended).

Jay-Z - Young Forever feat Mr. Hudson (Video)

Horrible song... but I'm sure this expensive video and the obscene amount of radio play this single is getting will push it up the charts.

Christmas No. 1!

Best Albums of 2009 - No. 9

9. Jamie T - Kings & Queens
-
Every track on Kings & Queens has an energy and excitement to it (even the acoustic track Jilly Armeen, my current favourite). Many reviewers have spent time trying to categorise Jamie T's music; pop, ska, punk, rap, indie... but to me, this just sounds like someone who loves music and isn't thinking too much about what his target demographic is. Singles 'Sticks n Stones' and 'Chaka Demus' have been two of my favourite pop tracks of 2009, and the recently released Man Machine is arguaby the standout track of Jamie T's career to date.

Best Albums of 2009 - No. 10

10. Mos Def - The Ecstatic
-
Another avant-garde release from Mos Def, featuring soul, funk, bollywood samples, a Slick Rick feature and production by J Dilla, Chad of The Neptunes, Madlib and Oh No.
Up-tempo lead singles 'Casa Bey' and 'Quiet Dog Bite Hard' set the tone for what was to be a genre-straddling effort with no mention of cars, watches or money, but one that was resolutely Hip Hop.
Unfortunatley for Mos, the high point was arguably the Slick Rick verse on 'Audotorium', which was a story told from the perspective of a US soldier in Iraq, conversing with the locals via the medium of rap. Sounds silly, but isn't. In all, easily the best major label Hip Hop album of the year.
-
Mos Def - Supermagic (Video)

Rihanna - Hard feat. Young Jeezy (Video)

Posted for obvious reasons, and they don't include the quality of the music.

Update: Video removed due to copyright infringement. Gutted [sarcasm].

Best Albums of 2009 - No. 11

11. Kasabian - West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum
-
Kasabian's third long-player topped the album chart this year, propelled by genuine hit singles with a psychedelic pop edge.
'Underdog', the Doors-a-like 'Fire' and 'Where Did All The Love Go?' got an awful lot of radio play.
From the album cover and the sounds on the disc, to the clothes and haircuts, Kasabian morphed into something more than the swaggering lad rockers that they started out as.

How NOT to deal with relegation...

Coritiba could only draw at home to Fluminese, which meant that the home side were relegated.

Yes, there are tears in the crowd, and dejected fans trudging out, much as you would see in England.

But then... it all goes 'a bit Brasilian', and the home fans decide to try and kill the referee and anyone else who is still on the pitch.

Mind you, if West Ham don't improve rapidly, I'm sure we'll see similar scenes at Upton Park come May next year...

YAW - Where Would You Be (Audio)

Apologies for the visuals, but just listen to the music.

Please.

It could just be the best 4 minutes 17 seconds of your day...

If you like this (and if you don't, your sick), you can pick it up on iTunes. It features on Gilles Peterson's Brownswood Bubbler's 3 compilation.

Definite - Playin' These Games mp3

A new Blu (aka GODleebarnes) production, from Definite's new album 'Matters at Hand'. I gather Blu has a few more tracks on that album, meaning I'll be picking it up tonight. This is what you would expect; laid back, soulful, sample-driven Hip Hop.

Wow... Chongqing Edition

Upon first glance, MAD Architects’ latest project for Chongqing, China looks like an impossibility. The project, entitled Urban Forest, features a stacked set of floors that cantilever drastically from their central support. The floors are designed to bring more nature and open space into a densely compacted urban area.
Floor-to-ceiling glass windows offer users an uninterrupted panoramic of the city as a way to combine nature with the urban metropolis. Pools, trees and courtyards are scattered about the walk-around balconies providing an aesthetic which is quite different from the typical office or residential space.

The Horrors - Who Can Say (Video)

I bought this album earlier in the year, and it sat on my shelf for months.

I dug it out at the weekend, and have been playing this track in particular on a regular basis.

They seem to have lost the goth look, and gone a bit Joy Division. Good move...

Blakroc - What You Do To Me mp3

Blakroc is The Black Keys + an array of emcee's that Damon Dash pulled together. This track features Jim Jones (who is dog-shit), and Billy Danze from MOP, above (who is a fierce).

The album is out on Monday (I've been spinning it for a week, and it's not your average rock/rap hybrid nonsense... this is GOOD.)

Saint John of Las Vegas - Trailer

The Thick of It - British TV at it's best

This is the best thing on TV at the moment.

Armando Ianucci's political piss-take is right up my street in every way. It exposes the cynicism, spin and reactionary 'let's please middle England' nature of modern politics. But the best part is the dialogue. This is a one-stop-shop for all your scathing, pithy put-down needs. This clip covers one of my favourite lines from Series 1 (still the strongest series, although the current series, showing on BBC 2 on Saturday nights, is racking up the quotables week in, week out).

Since I saw this, I've wanted to say "you just took a shit with your clothes on" to my wife when the moment was right, but then I realised she usually comes to me admitting she has just taken a shit with her clothes on. She has a problem...

Pirelli 2010 Calendar - Rudeness x 12 (NSFW!)

Although I have posted the odd naughty picture in my time, I cannot post 12 of them and not feel like a dirty old man.
-
Terry Richardson has really pushed the boat out this time with his 2010 Pirelli calendar work. For the uninitiated, the Pirelli calendar is, effectively, a high class version of those dirty calendars mechanics used to have up in the office (which I remember staring at as a boy while my mum's car got fixed).

Obama - Hopes Fading Fast T-Shirt

Wow. What a difference a year makes...
-
Just 12 months ago, Obama was going to change the world. Now, it appears, some of his shine is wearing off. The chaps at freshjive have created the t-shirt above, in response to the apparant lack of change ushered in by America's 'new' President during his first 52 weeks in the big job.
-
Personally, I think the criticism of his tenure is a little harsh. His priority was to steady a sinking ship, and repair some of the damage that Georgie Bush Junior had done since 2001. He seems to be doing okay in that respect.
-
I'm sure much of the criticism is based on unrealistic hopes for immediate, wide-ranging change, and the rest is generated by conservatives who would rather have a President with his finger on the trigger, ready to smash down a few third world countries whose political/social/religious ideals differ from theirs.
-

Extra-P visits Ameoba Records

I'm posting this for 2 reasons:

(1) The Large Professor is an excellent producer

(2) I've been to Ameoba in San Francisco. It's my spiritual home. I can literally spend 8 hours in there, just staring at the walls. In terms of hero-worship, the dude who owns these record shops is my God. If you like vinyl music, you must make the pilgramage to this store shop. In fact, I need to book a trip to the States soon, if only to do some shopping.

Oasis - The Boy with the Blues (Audio)

Another 'lost' Oasis track that I'm listening to on repeat at the moment...

Pharrell's 'Pacifist' Bullet-proof Vest

This guy has too much time on his hands. And too much money.
-
Above is a piece from the Pharrell Williams x Moncler collection. I'll let highsnobiety.com tell it...
-
"After just announcing their partnership with Japanese brand Visvim for a line called Moncler V, the classic outerwear label now brings news of a collection by Grammy-winning musician Pharrell Williams. The collection features an assortment of all-black jackets, and includes a “pacifist” version of the bulletproof jacket (pictured) with Velcro-ed side slits, reversible matte/shiny down vests and elongated puffers. Each jacket is built with textiles from Bionic Yarn, a Pharrell controlled company that produces fabric from recycled plastic bottles. Furthermore, printed linings feature images of lush forests, shot at dusk by Japanese artist Keita Sugiura. Prices and distribution details are yet to be finalized".
-
All very good, but I can't see too many people wearing this for a few beers down at the Dog & Duck on a Thursday night...

Pretentious bollocks, or an innovative artistic vision?

Either way, I like the track. AC's new album has grown on me of late. But it's still not as good as Panda Bear's solo record 'Person Pitch', which was genius.

Jay-Z - Empire State of Mind (Video)

And second, we have 'Young' Hova's (39 years old) pricey treatment to accompany his ode to New York City.

Jesus... a cheesy home town homage track... haven't we been here before, a thousand times over?! It only gets a pass for Ms. Keys involvement on an aesthetic level. Other than that, nothing on this track stands out. Lyrics are clumsy, the tempo is plodding, beat is sub-par... I'm hating.

Arctic Monkeys - Cornerstone (Video)

2 new vids for a Sunday night... and they couldn't be much different, content or budget-wise.

First up is my favourite track from the Arctic's 'Humbug' album. Yes it's weird, but it works.

The Fight That Killed Oasis

A brief synopsis of the row in France that ended it all:
-
Liam was playing guitar backstage.
Noel criticised Liam's playing.
Liam threw his own guitar at Noel.
The guitar landed at Noel's feet.
Noel jumped up and down on it, laughing.
Liam realised he'd just smashed his own guitar.
Liam grabbed Noel's guitars and smashed them up.
Noel stopped laughing, Liam started.
Noel said 'fuck this' and got in a cab.
End of Oasis.

Where The Wild Things Are X Medicom Toy

Spotted at hypebeast.
-
I'm looking forward to this flick. I bought my son the book last weekend, and I flicked through it. My initial thoughts were, firstly, how can Spike Jonze turn this into a 90 minute long feature? And secondly, how is he going to pitch it; purely as a kids film, or as a proper fantasy flick? I look forward to finding out, but one thing I do know is, it will be weird.

Vampire Weekend - Horchata mp3

New Vampire Weekend track, from the forthcoming album 'Contra' (Jan 11th release date for the UK). This track is called Horchata. It's stupidly silly, and ludicrously catchy. Very much business as usual for these fellas, then.

You can download this track in a .zip file HERE, which even comes with a pretty pdf of the cover and a lyric sheet.

Them Crooked Vultures - Scumbag Blues (Teaser Trailer)

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans - Trailer

Nic Cage (meh), Xzibit (nah), Werner Herzog directing (interesting)... Eva Mendes (earmarked as my future wife should my marriage go badly wrong...whoo-hoo!).

A sequel of sorts to Abel Ferrara's troubling 90's classic staring Harvey Kietel, which you should see if you haven't already. This time, Nic Cage is a smack head in New Orleans, as opposed to Kietel's New York-based 'window-wanker' (see the film... it will explain).

Werner Herzog directing bodes well though...

Pharrell's New Hoodie - Worth More Than Your Car

Oh dear.
-
Pharrell has bought himself a new grey hooded jacket. Not just any hooded jacket though... this is made by Hermes of Paris, and is made from Crocodile skin.
-
Pharrell has got form for spending silly money with Hermes on one-off bags, but this is different. Not only is it ugly, but when those French chaps make clothes with Crocodile, the price tag becomes astronomical. Conservative estimates suggest this could have cost him $18,000. Not so conservative estimates say it could have been as much as $75,000.
-
On his Japanese 'honeyee mag' blog mini-site he posted the above picture with the caption "Couldn't resist". Makes you sick doesn't it?

1800 Tequila - Essential Artists Bottle Range

In the US, Tequila has quickly become the club drink of choice. Tequila Silver in particular. The success of Patron is evidence of this.
-
1800 Tequila are enhancing the current coolness of the drink with this range of limited edition bottles. Expect to see them on the tables of Paris Hilton and Jay-Z from November.

Q-Tip - Life Is Better feat. Norah Jones (Video)

Interesting visuals.

Thom's Supergroup

Thom Yorke has pulled together a supergroup of sorts, including Flea and a chap from REM. Naturally, Nigel Godrich is also on board as a producer. A gig in LA acted as a rehearsal at the weekend...
-
"Flea, who began the evening playing nonchalantly off to the side of the stage, gradually moved toward centre stage, sharing the spotlight with Yorke while jamming on his bass guitar. At one point in the evening, a member of the audience shouted, "Play some Skynyrd!" Yorke responded by flashing both middle fingers, saying, "You think I should be playing Stone Temple Pilots too?"
-
Hmmmm. NME have the full story.

APC x Supreme = Fuck 'em

As has been well documented, I'm a fan of APC. Supreme... not so much, but some of their Tee's are good. It's mainly gear for Skateboarders or Street Fashion enthusiasts. I'm too old to do the former, and too old to pull off the latter convincingly.
-
This collabo smacks of lazyness. The embroidery looks cheap, and whilst the pin badge is pretty smart, this appears little more than a collabo to suck in gear fanatics and get them to part with their hard earned pound/dollar/yen. You can guarantee these come at a premium.
-
Nick Schonberger of High Snobiety has spotted this opportunism, but then launched a passionate defence; arguing that this is an attempt at satire from APC and Supreme. I'm not so sure.
-
Either way, APC jeans don't fit me...

Little Lion Man - Mumford & Sons (Video)

I like this... the single is out today.

These guys are from London and have worked with other capital-based folksters such as Laura Marling and Noah & The Whale, and I believe they are also working with The Maccabee's in some form or other.

Their debut album, Sigh No More, is out next Monday. I'll be supporting it with my hard earned Sterling.

Karen O - All Is Love

Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeah's has a change of pace for the new Spike Jonze movie film based on the classic US children's book Where The Wild Things Are.
