NME in a spot of bother

With print-media on its arse, another legendary title looks to be in a spot of bother. In a year that has seen Arena, Buck and HHC close, the NME are reporting a 25% drop off in year on year circulation.

The NME was once the most important music publication in the country. With writers like Julie Burchill and Tony Parsons, it helped helped break bands like The Smiths and The Sex Pistols. Now, it's a teeny bopper magazine full of shit bands with cool haircuts and nut-squashing jeans. The thing is, the pop charts show there is still a huge market for this type of style-over-substance poppy guitar music, so I can only assume it's the slow death of print media that is the cause.

Looks like the 'internets' have won.

Maximo Park - Wraithlike mp3

The excellent opener from Maximo Park's new album, 'Quicken The Heart', available at all good record shops (and some bad ones) now.

The Fratellis - Shameless mp3

Brand new Fratellis, in their trademark spirited style, from their album 'Here We Stand' (in the shops from Monday 9th June). Try and tell me it doesn't sound like Slade...

Pigeon Detectives - Keep On Your Dress mp3

The Pigeon Detectives latest long-player 'Emergency' has been mauled by critics (one called it 'horrible'). From a few plays, I think it sounds alright, and I'd suggest that a few reviewers may have missed the point (I like to think the lads are roll-playing as bitter ex-boyfriends, rather than actually being swaggering mysogonists).
Here is one of my favourite tracks from it at present:
